Dumpster Diving #4

 Not long ago someone called me to tell me they saw a table in the ditch near my house.  When you love junk people start calling you to rescue it.  I went to find it and it was in bad shape.  The top was fiberboard and was standing in about three inches of water.  The legs were dry and wooden.

 When I got it home I realized the legs were in good shape but the top was a mess.  Also there was a lot of duct tape on the bottom. The duct tape had not been holding the table together. My mind raced at what had been taped under the table.  But alas this table is not talking.  I decided the top could not be saved so off it came.

 The base was sturdy and a great size and all it needed was a top.  Off to the junky garage for that.

I found just the right cabinet door.  I got it in Waco, Tx at the Restore for a dollar. It had just been waiting for these legs. A couple of screws, some paint and it will be a beauty.
Before I reveal the finished table I have to tell you my motivation.  I was not painting this table for me or anyone else.  I just painted it for fun.  One of my dreams is to have a three story beach house and the third floor will be devoted to my grandchildren.  Let me set the record straight I have no beach house and no grandchildren but a girl can dream. This open space will have red lacquered beds with all white bedspreads and a circle of big overstuffed chairs in the middle of the room so we and read and talk into the night. Imagine the chair below in red and white stripes.

So when I was painting this table I painted it for my imaginary beach house.

This is a cute little stool that I traded some signs for.  I love it.  The top needs some love but the base is fabulous.

Grandma's Chest

When my husband's grandmother passed away we inherited her kitchen cabinet. It is not a Hoosier Cabinet. It was an inexpensive cabinet that they think was purchased from the Sears catalog.
When it first arrived we were living in a small house and it lived in the garage.  A couple of moves down the road and it made it into the house.  My youngest daughter always loved it and it lived in her room for quite a while.  It has been painted white, I tried to strip it, I painted flowers on it, and it has never gotten the respect it deserved.  Last summer I attempted to make amends to the cabinet.  I painted it with quality chalk paint and polished it with two kinds of wax.  I did not take any before pics of it. This makes me sad because the before/after pictures would have been amazing not  because of my talent but because it had been so abused by the last set of movers.
Here she is,  the old white chest (as she was called for many years at our house)!

 These pictures are a little brighter than I thought.  I guess I got carried away with picmonkey.
The quilt folded on her was my husband's grandmothers quilt.  I love red and turquoise together.

 I had a hard time deciding on knobs.  The original knobs got lost in some move.  I tried cute colored knobs but they seemed silly on this no nonsense cabinet. Finally I stained wooden knobs to match the counter top.

 I painted the inside white along with the counter back splash.  I had not reason for this I just liked how it looked.

This chest is only living at my house until my daughter has enough room for her.  She always loved the chest and will take good care of her.  I am enjoying her while she is mine, with her beautiful coat of paint.

Recipe/Picture Holder

I started this photo board the day I made the orange bowl. I got frustrated with it and put it to the side for a couple of weeks.  I could not get the base attached to the board.  Tonight I went back and worked on it and everything worked perfect.  It is amazing what happens when you don't push and let creativity come to you in it's own time.

I attached the bulldog clip with a screw and a drop of glue.

This would be perfect in the kitchen to attach a recipe to.

I love it with a piece of scrapbook paper behind the picture. 

 

Suitcase Love

I love vintage suitcases.

I found this great suitcase at my favorite thrift store recently.  The base came from a garage sale for less than a dollar. The label on the front bothers me but I have not decided what to do with it. I am so jealous of the pictures I see on other blogs and on pinterest.  I tried to "stage" this picture but it is still a work in progress.

This creation went to live at its new home this weekend.

Goodwill Hunting Again!

I have been blogging so often about the wonderful, junky finds that come from the Restore that I have not shown much love to Goodwill.  I love to go to Goodwill.  They have such a wide variety of good junk just waiting to be given a second chance.  Not long ago I found this wonderful find.  It is solid wood and had been painted pink and blue with a goose on the child (think 1985).  Yesterday I decided it was it's turn to get a makeover.  I painted with my favorite red.  I can't tell you the color name.  I took an old Ralph Lauren sweater to Lowes and they mixed this red for me.  I call it Ralph Lauren Red.  I think I went with red because it looks like fall.  When I tire of it in front of the fireplace I plan on using it to store sewing notions.  It would also make a cute tool box.  Thanks again Goodwill, you made my day!

Dumpster Diving Again!

This is a bookshelf I found on trash day. It was  homemade  and probably storage from someone's garage.

The back they had put on the shelves was thick and uneven.  I wanted to cover it with trim.

The front also needed some trim.  I had four spindles and was too lazy to go to the store to buy trim.  I used the spindles to trim out the edges.  I glued and screwed the spindles to the edges to give it a cleaner look.  The final step was to prime and paint it.

I love maps and Mod Podge!

Sometimes when you are in a crafty state of mind you repurpose or redo something on the spur of the moment and you love the way it turns out.  A couple of weeks ago I was having a crafting Saturday with craftdictator.blogspot.com and we were using an old Atlas that I had bought at an estate sale.
I went upstairs to get something and in the closet I saw an old tub that I had not used in a couple of years.  The inside needed cleaning and painting.  The outside had some imperfections that paint could not cover.  That is when the maps came to the rescue.  I decoupaged the outside with maps. I am really happy with the way it turned out.

Step one: round up some junk to redo.  I found an old tub and a Christmas tray (metal).
Step two: find some spray paint in my junky garage and go to work.

Step three: decide what wonderful old maps to decoupage on the tub and tray.  This was the hardest part of the process.
